Columbus Ohio Beer and Hockey

On March 12th we left Pittsburgh for Columbus, OH. We first stopped in Steubenville, OH to hit up the Valley Wine Cellar for our first beer stop. The selection was okay but nothing special. We continued on for Columbus and arrived at Barley's Smokehouse and Brewpub. 5 samplers and one sampler glass pyramid later we were on our way to the Penguins game. A quick stop at the hotel and dinner at BD Mongolians and then the Nationwide Arena. The Penguins lost but we got the overtime loss point. We headed back to the hotel to find a bar to drink away our sorrows. That bar ended up being Bodega. This place was a little trendy but they had an impressive tap list so we were happy. Had some good local Columbus beer and a few favorites. My wife fell in love with the Chocolate Covered Raspberry, a black and tan concoction of Young's Double Chocolate Stout and Lindeman's Framboise! The White Castle across the street ended our night and we got a good night's sleep to prepare for the marathon of beer and food the next day!!

We arose early to make it to the Ohio Deli for the Dagwood Challenge. After eating 5lbs of food in 30 minutes I wasn't ready for beer but beer shopping wasn't out of the question. We traveled all over the Columbus metro area and hit 8 different beer stores!

Grapes of Mirth
Kenny Road Markey
The Anderson's General Store
Whole Foods
Trader Joes
From The Vine
Palmer Beverage
Blacklick Wine and Spirits

We came back with an impressive beer haul all tucked away in the trunk of the rental minivan. Pictures and reviews can be viewed in the links below.

New Glarus Unplugged Iced Barley Wine

I thought I would use the blog to post some reviews of different beer that I can revisit later after cellaring them for some time. The first one I am starting with is New Glarus Unplugged Iced Barley Wine. This beer is 13.5% ABV and is more like a liquor than a beer.

The label states, "English aristocracy flaunted their wealth saving barley wines from exclusive friends. Our Iced Barley Wine is an intense brew of 28.5 degrees Plato OG. Frozen in the cellars over a powerful twelve week fermentation. You hold an elegant riot of bittersweet sherry and dark fruit earthy notes. Warm and expansive, it will fill your senses. Great for contemplative sipping now or lay down for an elegant occasion with friends."

I thought I would do both mentioned above. I am contemplatively sipping on one right now and have two in the cellar for that elegant occasion. Below is my current review from tonight.

This one pours a clear, dark ruby red with a quarter inch eggshell head that receded to a thin ring. The smell is sweet malt and booze. Digging deeper into the aroma one might pick up dark rum, overripe dark fruits, and spicy, earthy hops. The taste is sweet and boozy. The fruits and rum come to the front and the booze and spiciness of the hops tickle the top of the throat. Mouthfeel is oily and the carbonation tingles on the tongue and down the throat. The drinkability is lowered due to the large alcohol content. This one is definitely a sipper.

First Post

Welcome to the new CrazyCraftBeer Blog! There will be regular posting about all things Craft Beer. Updates on the cellar and current beer trips, beer purchases and beer trades.

There were 3 major beer excursions in the last 3 months so I will focus on those first and then we will get into the cellar.
